TOKYO and SAN JOSE, Calif. -- October 23, 2007 --  Renesas Technology Corp. today announced that the company has won the patent infringement lawsuit filed by Translogic Technology, Inc. against Renesas Technology America, Inc., Hitachi, Ltd. and its affiliates. Recently, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) upheld a ruling of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that the patent (No. 5,162,666) issued to Translogic Technology is invalid. In addition, the CAFC ordered the dismissal of the patent infringement suit, overturning the judgment of the United States District Court for the District of Oregon, which had awarded Translogic Technology $86.5 million (plus interest) in damages and to suspend sales of products incorporating the disputed technology.

The suit was originally filed in 1999 in the United States District Court for the District of Oregon by Translogic Technology, charging Hitachi (from which Renesas Technology was later spun off as an independent company), and its affiliates, with infringement of its patent on microcontrollers. While the litigation progressed, Renesas Technology has repeatedly taken the position that the patent in question is invalid and that the company's products are not in violation of it, and the ruling by the CAFC vindicates this claim.

Renesas Technology has always scrupulously respected the legitimate intellectual property rights of third parties and will continue to do so by complying with the intellectual property protection regimes of the United States, Japan, China, and other countries. At the same time, the company will continue to ensure the protection and value of its own intellectual property.
